Two kinds of cookie. The ones the site needs to work, which are always on, and one analytics cookie that loads only if you say yes. None of them follow you to other websites.
This page says what this site stores on your device, why it stores it, and how you change your mind. It sits alongside our Privacy Policy.
A small text file a website leaves on your device so it can recognize the device later.
Phone, tablet, or computer. The file lets the site remember something about your visit. Whether you accepted cookies, for instance, or which pages you have already seen. Almost every website uses them in some form.
Most are harmless and useful. Some keep the site working at all. Others show the owner how the site is being used, so it can be made better. Cookies cannot run programs and cannot carry viruses.
One point matters here. Some cookies use pseudonymous identifiers. These tell one browser apart from another without knowing your name.
Picture a cloakroom ticket numbered 47. The staff know coat 47 came back three times this week. They still have no idea whose coat it is.
Under data protection law, that ticket can still count as personal data. So we treat it that way.
To keep the site working, and to see which articles people actually read.
Two reasons, and no others. The first is to make the site run at all, and run securely. The second is to see in a general way how people use it. That means which articles get read most, and how visitors move from page to page. It is how we work out what to write next.
We do not use cookies to build a profile of you, to follow you around the internet, or to show you advertising.
Essential ones, always on. Analytics ones, only if you accept. Advertising ones, never.
These are the cookies the site cannot work without, plus the one that remembers your cookie choice. A cookie counts as essential only if the site fails without it. Being convenient for us is not enough. On that basis these need no consent.
These show us how the site is used. We run Google Analytics 4. They tell us which pages are read most, how long people stay, and how visitors arrive. They use pseudonymous identifiers, which tell one browser apart from another without stating who you are. Google states that Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses. We never ask it to name anybody, and we read the reports as patterns. These load only if you accept them.
We show no advertisements and we set no advertising cookies. We do not use cookies to track you for marketing. If that ever changes, this page changes first, and we ask your consent before a single advertising cookie is set.

On your first visit a banner asks whether you accept or decline the optional cookies. Nothing optional loads until you answer. You are free to decline, and the site still works.
Change your mind whenever you like. The button below reopens the cookie settings.

Our analytics provider sets its own, under its own policy.
A few cookies here come from outside services we rely on to run the site. They work under their own privacy and cookie policies. We pick them because they meet the standards described in our Privacy Policy.
